A £1m local contract win - right on our doorstep

We are used to winning million pound contracts all over the UK from our offices in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Warrington. Now we have achieved success closer to home, with a £1m+ project providing the laboratory furniture for the New South Glasgow Hospitals.

The £840m ‘super hospital’ is Scotland’s largest single investment in healthcare services and has the potential to become one of the most advanced medical campuses in Europe. It will be built on the site of the existing Southern General Hospital for NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde and is only minutes from our headquarters in Govan.

Assab won the contract after an in-depth procurement and consultation process with Brookfield Multiplex.

Mike Sharples, Project Director for Brookfield Multiplex said, ‘This is great news for Assab and I’m delighted that we have been able to source a company on the doorstep. This project is a fantastic opportunity for Glasgow and as the main contractor we want to make sure we maximise the opportunities for local companies. We’ve developed a robust Community Benefit Strategy and are working hard to make sure people and businesses across Glasgow and Scotland are part of the scheme.’

Mike added, ‘We initially met with Assab at a ‘Meet the Buyer’ event in Govan and were very impressed with their knowledge, skill and expertise. When the laboratory furniture package was issued, 17 companies expressed an interest in this package but Assab were best placed to deliver the works. Being a local company underpins our Community Benefit efforts that have been a great success.’

Assab’s recent projects include laboratories for Proctor & Gamble in Newcastle, Environmental Scientifics Group in Oxfordshire and Staffordshire, Applied Biosciences in Warrington, International Paint in Gateshead and Imperial College in London.

In Scotland, projects include University of Glasgow, Glasgow Caledonian University, the Scottish Police Services Authority Forensics Crime Lab in Dundee and Langside College in Glasgow.

‘This is a real success story for Assab, comments Assab Business Unit Head Jane Finnigan, ‘we are absolutely delighted to be associated with such a prestigious project and are excited about the opportunity to showcase our vast expertise in our local area’.

The New South Glasgow Hospitals work package for Assab will commence June 2011 and is expected to run for an initial period of 23 weeks. The Assab business is supported by Morris & Spottiswood’s other internal businesses, such as Bespoke Joinery. Susan Cardwell, Business Unit Head for Bespoke Joinery will organise the manufacture of office benching and shelving for the project.
